Mayor John Robert Smith on why transportation matters to him

Check out this short video of Mayor John Robert Smith, T4 America co-chair and former Mayor of Meridian, Mississippi, in which he discusses his very personal reasons for choosing not to seek a fifth term as mayor and move to Washington, D.C. to be a part of this effort to change the course of our country’s transportation system.

I live a short 4 to 5 hour drive from my hometown of Meridian MS. However the thought of getting on the interstate after a grueling week of 15 hours in traffic every week (not including a 40-50 hour work week), I am exhausted at the thought of driving to Meridian to visit family. Another option, like a rapid rail system, would be awesome! If nothing more… it would make Delta think about those bag charges. ?

It’s heartening to see someone like Mayor Smith not only recognize the problem but make a personal commitment to do something about it. We need many more like him.

Mr. Smith goes to Washington indeed! And we’re all the better for it. He tells a vivid tale of the reasons that led to the move and his belief in the the absolute need for reform, the latter tinged with a bit of Faulknerian fatalism if society doesn’t succeed. Mississippi gives us yet another visionary! Good luck Mayor Smith and to everyone at T4America.
