T4America statement on the President’s proposed FY 15 budget for transportation

James Corless, director of Transportation for America, issued this statement in response to the Administration’s budget proposal, released today:

“The budget clearly recognizes that investment in infrastructure is essential in laying the groundwork for our future prosperity over many years. Many of the priorities expressed in the budget clearly point in the right direction: keeping our system in good repair, supporting local efforts to promote economic development, spurring innovation through competitive grants and eliminating freight bottlenecks.

These principles ought to inform the reauthorization of the federal program as Congress takes up the matter later this year. We look forward to seeing in greater detail how the Administration proposes to accomplish these goals in the promised four-year reauthorization proposal, and in the 30-year vision now being developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

We are pleased the President has acknowledged the need to address the insolvency of the Highway Trust Fund. Our alliance of local stakeholders from across the country agrees that this is an urgent issue, and has called for a stable, ongoing source of increased revenue. With the current transportation program expiring at the end of September, we look forward to working with Congress and the Administration on a fully funded program equal to the challenges our economy faces.”
