[...] Moreover, from USDOT down, transportation agencies are encouraging a greater ‘modal split’, or more bicycling, walking and transit use. This is particularly important along Sunset Drive, where local residents could easily walk to school, church, the store, etc. It is important because people who bicycle through this area do not have real parallel street alternatives. It is important because FDOT is funded through federal dollars, and federal dollars are not coming to Florida or our auto-centric projects. [...]

I live in a town of about 5,000 people and there is a regional bus system that covers the area. They use small bus's that hold 20 to 30 people and are handicapped accessable, usually try to take people to 2 nearby larger towns for doctor appointments and/or shopping and other destinations, but also take people to other destinations as well. I think that this type of transportation would be a valuable resource for other areas of the country.

Local officials & state officials need to know and understand the importance of it's demographics of their communities where they can identify the companies/employees/freight lines/transit users to simply guide these targets to assist where we need to create those central locations that are more likely to convince it's population to consider new alternative modes of travel and how they accept that vision is key! Mixed use developments are great, we can create those even with existing communities, just need to circle in who is part of the big picture.

We can move mountains, it's just how we say it!
