We really need to train drivers better: 1) to pay careful attention while they are driving; 2) to NOT talk on cell phones or text while they are driving; and 3) above all, just be careful!

More than 76,000 Americans have been killed while crossing or walking along a street in their community in the last 15 years.

These "accidents" overwhelmingly occur on roads that are dangerous by design, with little or no provision made for people on foot, in wheelchairs, or on a bicycle. With the 52 largest metro areas spending just $1.39 per person of federal funds on bicycle and pedestrian projects, it’s no wonder our streets are so dangerous.

To make our streets safer, we need roads that are routinely designed for everyone using them – Complete Streets. And just as importantly, we need leaders who will drive those improvements.

Write Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood about making our streets safer for pedestrians.

America hot spot locations (1) with constrained multi-modal (ie. walking, biking, vehicular) facilities of poor safety design, and (2) end of engineered design life structures; should be replaced on through establishment of a high priority Federal and State project list for infrastructure replacement using Federal stimulus funds.

America hot spot locations where such constraints exist and the structures have not reached the end of engineering design life should be studied for construction of high priority parallel structures, cantalevered additions, and still other routing considerations on Bicycle master plans to make multi-modal transportation safer in the U.S.

Best Regards,

It's great that this meeting happened, and I hope that Secretary LaHood does all he can to decrease the number of deaths and injuries on US streets. But this term "complete" really bothers me, just like "safer", "everyone" and so on... language is a powerful thing. More on my [Blog->http://greenideafactory.blogspot.com/2009/11/regarding-compleat-streets.html]
