Moving Cooler's goals are way too modest.
As usual they list mass transit last instead of first and furthermore fail to mention how quickly existing mass transit systems could be ramped up by
providing continuous and frequent local service nights and weekends.
So many "commuter" rail systems do not even run on weekends or
"off-peak". Furthermore there are few connections or info on how to
get to places once you reach a station.
Buses could be easily fitted with bike racks...
If the US could cut its oil usage and consequent greenhouse emissions by
5.8% when over 100 US communities have actually had mass transit
service CUTS imagine what is possible with service and connection expansion.

The reason that ten tons of ink have been spilled on this topic and there has been NO PROGRESS is because no high-profile groups or individuals are willing to take on the fossil-fuel companies by hitting them where it hurts -- by committing a "gaff" and pointing out that the private-auto and sprawl system was shoved down our throats (see the movie "Taken for a Ride") and is heavily subsidized by the taxpayer, while the oil, coal (yes coal), and auto industries profit from our misery.
A hundred "solutions" have been offered: complete streets, biofuels, road-pricing... all extend the life of an unsustainable system. What we need is some honest econmists who will say without equivocation that the autosprawl system is a subsidized nightmare.

Simple solution. Available right now. Immediate benefit. Low tech:

Free public transit.

You can do it in your town or city right now for 60 basis points of tax. Do not wait for national governements, they are owned by the fossil-fuel industry.

See our blog for a list of towns and cities that have done it.
