Michael, you make an excellent point. I have seen neighborhoods in my community that have no sidewalks. Pedestrians and cyclists traveling these routes face perils daily with vehicular traffic. It is extremely dangerous and an example of poor urban planning.

Sidewalks are not that expensive. No one lets a developer build a subdivision that has no water, no electricity. Why should they be allowed to build without sidewalks. No wonder kids are obese.

It is past time that we realize that we can not accommodate more and more automobiles; this simply does not work.

In crowded cities and suburbs, we must take space away from vehicular traffic in favor of pedestrians, bicycles, and modern public transportation. Future growth must be transit oriented.

Not everybody can use a private automobile for every transportation need.

Of course building more lanes and highways makes no sense. It's a well known fact that this only increases traffic in the long run.

Instead, we need better public transit, as well as better urban design in terms of real neighborhoods, which encourage walking as most necessities (and luxuries) are located nearby.
